 College Preparatory English 12


Term:  Fall 2006-Spring 2007

Prerequisites:  College Preparatory English 11 or Teacher/Parent recommendation.

Course Description
This course will help students think logically and critically, and develop their personal writing style.  Through study, discussion, analysis, writing, and reflection, students will study the universal themes of World Literature.  The use of technology to draft, revise, and edit complex texts will be a part of the course, as will research techniques and formats.

Students will be expected to participate in mature discussions and serious reflection.  This class is not to be taken lightly.  It is a serious course that will prepare students for their future role as college learners, and it will be treated accordingly by the instructor.   

Required Materials and Texts
Themes in World Literature. Ed. Eliot, et.al..  Boston.  Houghton Mifflin, 1970.
Dozens of articles, movies, essays, audiocassettes, short stories, and novels to augment the thematic units.

Course Outline
CP English 12 is designed by thematic units.  Each unit takes five to seven weeks to cover. At the start of Semester One, students will collectively select five units to study from the following options:

Love and Hate, Fate and Free Will, Identity, Justice, Nature, Good and Evil, Greatness,  and Truth.

A course schedule can not be laid out by unit, as it will depend on which themes are chosen.  However, each of the thematic units will contain the following elements:

I.  Writing
The following types of writing will be utilized in CP English 12:


  1. Thesis and support papers
  2. Persuasive essays
  3. Literary Analysis/criticism
  4. Abstracts and summaries
  5. Narrative essays
  6. Research Papers:  Each unit will conclude with a summative paper.  This paper includes 10 sources, refutation, and a well-crafted thesis dealing with the unit.

II.  Vocabulary
      The vocabulary in CP English 12 is intended to prepare students to use an academic discourse in  
      college.  The words will be used by professors and professionals; it is the vocabulary of the
      professional student.

III. Grammar
      Grammar in CP English 12 will primarily be taught in the context of students’ writing.  However,   
      emphasis will be placed on the following:

  1. MLA Documentation Style
  2. Formatting academic papers
  3. Parenthetical source citations
  4. “Mini” Grammar Lessons as needed

IV. Speaking, Thinking, and Listening


  1. Socratic Dialogue days will take place during which issues are discussed, contested, and evaluated by students in a large-group setting.
  2. Journals:  Students will keep a journal throughout CP English 12 in order to record thoughts on themes, vocabulary notes, MLA citation notes, and responses to classroom prompts.
  3. Student presentations, group work

V.  Portfolio Work
      Students will complete a final graduation portfolio in CP English 12, which will entail:

  1. Interviewing
  2. Resume and business letter construction
  3. Exhibit drafting, revision, and finalizing
  4. Organization and formatting
