What if I have a question that isn’t asked on this sheet?
Q: What do I do when the bell rings?
A: Be in your seat and begin the task at hand. There will always be a task at hand.
Q: What if I’m tardy?
A: See me. If your tardy is unexcused, you have chosen to break Rule One.
Q: What if I have to go to the bathroom?
A: See me. If it is an emergency, you will be given a pass.
Q: How do I know when to stop talking?
A: You should stop talking when the bell rings. I
will let you know if there will be time for chat during the hour. This is
a privilege I RARELY grant.
Q: What if I was absent?
A: AVOID MISSING SCHOOL UNLESS YOU ARE ILL OR HAVING A FAMILY
EMERGENCY. OTHERWISE, IT IS NOT WORTH FALLING BEHIND!!
IF YOU WERE ABSENT, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE UP WORK.
PLEASE SEE YOUR STUDENT HANDBOOK FOR THE PHS POLICY ON ABSENT WORK. YOU WILL BE GIVEN AS MUCH TIME AS YOUR HANDBOOK DESIGNATES TO COMPLETE THE WORK.
Make-up work procedures in Mrs. Ross’ Class:
Q: What is that can in the front of the room?
A: That can is a way for you to “contact me.” If you have any questions or comments about the class, you can write them on a piece of paper and put them in the can before or after the bell rings. I’ll be glad to answer most anything you ask.
If you would prefer to remain anonymous, that is fine, but if the question is subject-related, please write your hour on the note. I will answer the question aloud or on the board the next day. Respect The Can.
Q: What am I supposed to do when you put us in groups?
A: You are responsible for making group work a success. If someone is not contributing, find a way for them to
help. If someone is taking on all the work, be assertive and take responsibility.
Group work is not just something we do in school. No matter where you end up in the world, you will be expected to work with others at some point. You will not always get to work with friends, and you are expected to be mature and respectful to every person you are asked to work with.
Q: What am I supposed to do during class discussions?
A: Class discussions are very important to this
course. During class discussions, please do not interrupt each other. We are all capable of having a mature conversation by now; do not choose to break Rule Three.
Listening and speaking are integral to discussions. As the year progresses, we will work on these abilities.
Q: What am I supposed to do during Channel One?
A: You are expected to pay attention. You may chat with a neighbor during commercials.
Q: What if I need help or don’t understand an assignment?
A: You’re in luck! I’m available every day before and after school. I am always in the building by 7, and I usually don’t leave until 3 pm. It’s best that you give me notice; we can set up an appointment and I’ll certainly be able to help J I AM HERE FOR YOU—REMEMBER THAT!
Q: I’m at home, and I have an important question to ask you. What do I do!?
A: I check my email from home several times a night from 6 pm-9pm. Contact me at lross@portlandk12.org and I’ll respond ASAP. If you ask a question that has already been answered in class, you might rather “phone a friend” for the information.
Q: What happens when you’re done grading our assignments?
A: The work will be filed in your student folder, which is housed in the student file cabinet. You may access the file before or after the bell rings, or as-needed with permission. Your files are not permitted to leave the room. If your parent would like to request a copy of your work, I will gladly provide it.
Q: What if I forgot my book/pencil/pen/paper?
A: Well, you broke Rule Two. You may retrieve the item or share with a friend, but you have chosen to broke the rule.
Q: What if I didn’t do my assignment?
A: You have chosen to break Rule Two. Late work is not accepted… BUT…sometimes things come up!
THEREFORE, You will be given two “Dog Ate My Homework” certificates at the beginning of the semester. They are worth up to 10 points each toward a missing assignment. USE THEM WISELY.
If you have used your passes and still failed to do your assignment, you will earn a zero. Keep reading*…
IF YOU FORESEE A PROBLEM DOING AN ASSIGNMENT, PLEASE SEE ME IMMEDIATELY!!! DO NOT WAIT UNTIL AFTER THE ASSIGNMENT IS DUE!
WE CAN WORK TOGETHER TO COME UP WITH A PLAN FOR COMPLETION*.
*I reserve the right to grant or deny an extension based on the reason, your commitment to class, or the frequency of your requests.
Q: What if I have a question that isn’t asked on this sheet?
A: Ask it! If you’re uncomfortable asking me directly, please put a note in The Can.
