The Portland band program offers a wide variety of opportunities for its
band students.  Beginning in 6th grade, students work in well-balanced
ensembles, participate in field trips and perform in regular concerts.

As they mature through the program, instrumental music students in Portland
may choose to participate in many more activities.  Each year, roughly one-
third of the eligible students participate in solo and ensemble
festivals and return as medalists.  In addition, the bands in grades seven through twelve participate in band festivals each year and have repeatedly
qualified for state festival participation.

The band enjoys an especially close relationship with the community.  The
Portland High School Band supports their school and community through
their participation at sporting events and civic functions.  In addition, the
band has performed for large, appreciate audiences at the Holland Tulip
Festival parade, "visiting band" performances, and at regional marching
invitationals including the Grand Ledge Invitation and M.S.U.'s Spartan
Invitational.

An active and supportive booster program helps supplement our program.
Some of the boosters' past projects have included music stands and
fundraisers to help defray the cost of the band camp which the high school
band attends each summer.

One of the highlights of our year is our "Day of Music," an all-day concert
which spotlights not only the student performers, but the many fine local
musicians as well.

The Portland band program is an important part of our community and has
established a tradition of excellence.
