Mathematics
The goal of mathematics education is for all students to
develop mathematical power to participate fully as a citizen and worker in our
global world.
Mathematically powerful individuals should be able to:
- Problem solve using mathematics--Students will be able to
develop and apply strategies to solve a wide variety of problems. They
will recognize the appropriateness of using technological tools and will have
confidence using them for solving problems
- Communicate mathematically--Students will effectively use
the language of mathematics to communicate their thinking. They will
realize that representing, discussing, reading, writing, and listening to
mathematics are a vital part of learning and using mathematics.
- Reason mathematically--The ability to reason is a process
that grows out of many experiences that convince children that mathematics
makes sense. Students will be able to make conjectures, gather evidence,
and build an argument to support ideas and validate their thinking.
Students will be able to select, apply, and translate among mathematical
representations in order to solve problems.
- Making Connections--Students will be able to recognize
relationships among different topics of mathematics, use mathematics in other
curricular areas and in one's daily life. By making connections students
will recognize the usefulness of mathematics.
