Reading Instruction:

We use the Houghton Mifflin Language Arts Program as a resource for our reading instruction.  The selections we are currently reading are from the theme called "Nature's Fury".  In addition to this program, your child will participate in small group reading instruction, literature circles and book clubs.

Independent Reading:

Each child reads silently 25-30 minutes during each school day.  Please encourage your child to spend an additional 30 minutes a day of reading at home.  We use the Accelerated Reader program to guide students with selecting books and improve their reading abilities.

Our library time is Wednesday afternoon at 12:10 a.m.  Although we visit our school library, I also have a classroom library that I purchase books for throughout the year.  If we do not have a book your child would like to read, send me a message so that I can consider adding it to my classroom library.  Another good resource for books is the children's section of the Portland Public Library.

Writing Instruction:

In addition to the Houghton Mifflin Language Arts Program, we use the 6 Traits +1 Writing program as a resource for our writing instruction.  We have also starting to use the Write 4 Today program that gives us daily practice using the writing process. We have also been learning about writing different types of paragraphs.

Informal Writing:

Students will write a journal response almost on a daily basis in the classroom.  Each child is asked to reflect on his/her learning, generated answers to questions, or write about a topic of his/her choosing.  Periodically, we share our ideas written in our journals.

Formal Writing and Sharing:

To begin the year, the students will be working on working through the writing process to develop a published description of something.  The student will pick something that is important to them that they know well as the focus of this descriptive writing piece.

Spelling Instruction:

Our spelling instruction also comes from the Houghton Mifflin Language Arts program.  The students will be given a pretest on Monday and a test on Friday.  Each student is assigned spelling practice pages to complete and turned in Friday.  Much of the time needed to complete this practice is expected to be completed as homework.

In addition to using the Houghton Mifflin Program, the students will also be expected to learn science, social studies and math vocabulary words.  Some of the tests will be the spelling and definitions of these words.
