Portland Public Schools’ Portrait of a Learner identifies five foundational skills and dispositions that every student should develop. These areas reflect the values, aspirations, and strengths of our community. Each is important on its own, but together they build toward something greater.
Mindful | Thinker | Problem Solver | Communicator | Resilient
Together, they form a cycle of growth, a continuous journey where each skill strengthens the others and deepens over time. As learners grow in mindfulness, thinking, problem-solving, communication, and resilience, they do more than build skills. They become individuals who contribute with purpose, add value to their learning and community, and feel confident reaching their full potential. We call this outcome a Contributor.

In Portland, being a Contributor is not a separate skill. It is the result of developing and living out the five skills and dispositions of a Contributor. This reflects the mindset of a lifelong learner, someone who continues to grow, reflect, and act with purpose beyond the classroom. The development of a Contributor is what we hope to see in every learner, from preschool to graduation and beyond.
