The “Why” established the purpose and foundation of the Portrait of a Learner. It identified the skills and dispositions Portland students need to be successful in school, work, relationships, and the community and created a shared PK–12 vision for student development.

The district established the purpose, framework, and direction for the Portrait of a Learner. Staff, students, parents, community members, the Board of Education, and district committees provided input on the skills and dispositions Portland students need for future success.

Based on this feedback, the district selected and defined the five Portrait of a Learner skills and dispositions and developed the final framework.

“Opportunities” are the intentional experiences provided to students to learn, practice, and demonstrate each of the five Portrait of a Learner skills and dispositions. The work focused on identifying and aligning these experiences across grade levels so every student has consistent opportunities to develop as a Contributor.

The Portrait of a Learner Committee identified and aligned opportunities for students to learn, practice, and demonstrate each Portrait of a Learner skill and disposition. This work resulted in documentation designed to create greater consistency across grade levels and ensure every student has meaningful opportunities to develop the five skills and dispositions.

During 2026–2027, the district will develop and pilot the defense of the learning process in grades 2, 5, 8, and 12.

Students participating in the pilot will reflect on their growth, select evidence of their learning, and explain how they have developed the five Portrait of a Learner skills and dispositions.

• All staff will develop a shared understanding of the five Portrait of a Learner skills and dispositions and learn to identify what each looks like in student learning and behavior.
• Staff will receive professional learning, examples, and implementation resources to support the integration of the Portrait of a Learner into existing instruction and student experiences.
• Staff will intentionally provide students with opportunities to learn, practice, and demonstrate each of the five skills and dispositions.
• Staff will share their experiences, examples, successes, and challenges with their building committee throughout the year. The second staff meeting of each month will be reserved for Portrait of a Learner discussion, collaboration, and feedback.

• The Portrait of a Learner committees will review and refine the PK–12 opportunities and establish common expectations for student evidence, reflection, and portfolio use at each grade level. 
• The committees will develop and pilot the expectations, structure, and evaluation criteria for the defense of learning and prepare the final ownership plan for implementation in 2027–2028.
• The committees will gather feedback from students and staff, review examples of student work, and use the pilot results to refine the final implementation plan.
• The Portrait of a Learner Committee will also pilot SpacesEDU as a digital portfolio platform for collecting student evidence and supporting reflection.

Full implementation means the Portrait of a Learner is embedded across the district. Students will consistently learn, practice, demonstrate, reflect on, and provide evidence of their growth in the five skills and dispositions throughout their PK–12 experience.

Full implementation is not an endpoint. It creates an ongoing opportunity to review, revise, and strengthen the Portrait of a Learner each year.

• All staff will provide students with opportunities to learn, practice, and demonstrate the five Portrait of a Learner skills and dispositions. These opportunities will be aligned vertically across grade levels and horizontally across classrooms and programs.
• All students will regularly reflect on their growth and select evidence demonstrating their development of the five Portrait of a Learner skills and dispositions.
• All students will use SpacesEDU to maintain a digital portfolio containing evidence of their growth.
• Students in grades 2, 5, 8, and 12 will demonstrate ownership of the Portrait of a Learner by completing a formal defense of learning at the end of the school year. Staff will support and mentor students as they select evidence, reflect on their growth, and prepare for their defense of learning.

• The Portrait of a Learner committees will review the implementation of the Portrait of a Learner, evaluate the effectiveness of the defense of the learning process, and recommend adjustments for future years.
• The committees will review student participation, the quality of student reflection and evidence, staff and student feedback, portfolio usage, and the effectiveness of the defense of the learning process.
• The committee will also begin developing a Portrait of an Educator aligned with the district’s Portrait of a Learner.

The Portrait of a Learner will remain an ongoing district commitment rather than a completed initiative. Staff and committees will regularly review and revise the opportunities, digital portfolio process, and defense of learning activities as the needs of our students and district change.

The district will use student participation, student and staff feedback, portfolio usage, the quality of student reflection and evidence, implementation experiences, and student outcomes to strengthen the Portrait of a Learner and ensure it remains meaningful, relevant, and aligned across the PK–12 experience.
